Ontario Drive Clean Program
The Light Duty Drive Clean program requires most passenger cars, vans, sport utility and light trucks with gross vehicle weight under 4500 kilograms (taken from the door post of your vehicle) registered in the Ontario Drive Clean program area (northern counties are exempt) to be test in order to renew the stickers on their license plates (look for the red asterisks on your renewal form). Light-duty vehicles that are 1988 model year and newer require testing every two years beginning in the 5th calendar year after their model year.  1987 and older model years are exempt from testing.  As a consumer protection measure, and emissions test is required for an ownership transfer for vehicles with a model year older than the current calendar year.  This to ensure that consumers do not unwittingly purchase a used vehicle with emissions problems.  Again, 1987 and older model years are exempt form this requirement.

The Heavy Duty drive Clean program requires large trucks and buses with gross vehicle weight of more than 4500 kilograms and 5 years or older, to pass their emissions test each year in order to have their registration renewed. This applies to diesel-powered vehicles registered anywhere in Ontario and to heavy-duty non-diesel vehicles in the areas of Southern Ontario where light-duty testing is required.

In 2005, an incentive was introduced to encourage good vehicle maintenance by giving heavy duty diesel vehicle operators the opportunity to have their vehicle tested every two years instead of annually. If your vehicle had a drive clean test with opacity result of 20 per cent or less, you will be exempt for the next calendar year.  (look for the red asterisks on your renewal form)

Heavy duty vehicles require testing every year beginning in the 5th calendar year after their model year. As a consumer protection measure, an emissions test is required for an ownership transfer for vehicles with a model year older than the current calendar year.

All pass reports are valid for 12 months from its date of issue. During that time the registration can be renewed and ownership can be transferred.

If you want to know the testing history of a vehicle just to to www.driveclean.com and enter your vehicles "vin" number.
