Is Your Car Ready for Hot Weather?

Believe it or not, the hot summer months can be just as hard on your car as the cold frigid winter season. Extremes in temperature always take their toll on vehicles, especially one that are not well maintained. So before you head out on that long awaited summer vacation or even a short day trip, here are some things that you should consider for your vehicles.
  1. Inspect all engine belts and replace those that are frayed, cracked, oil soaked or glazed.
  2. Check the radiator coolant level and the condition of the radiator fins and tubes.
  3. Check hoses for cracks, swelling, or bulging. If they have soft of spongy spots, replace them.
  4. Check all fluid levels including windshield washer, brake and power steering fluid. Check your automatic transmission. Also check when your transmission was last serviced. Remember heat deteriorates transmission fluid.
  5. Check the tire pressures and the condition of the tire tread. Worn treads will not grip well on a wet road and  may be prone to failure in high heat conditions.
  6. If your vehicle has air conditioning, has it been serviced lately? A cool interior certainly makes traveling on a hot day more enjoyable.
  7. When was the last time you had your engine tuned up? A clean running car contributes to less smog in our atmosphere and also saves money on gas.
  8. Check and replace worn wiper blades.
  9. Always carry an emergency tool kit, booster cables, a fire extinguisher, bottled water, pliers, a “Call Police”  sign, and today many people carry a cell phone for emergency calls.
